By the time the kids are in bed, I used to spend my only quiet hour scrolling my phone and then wonder why I felt more tired. This fall I built a simple 20-minute wind-down routine instead. These four things make it easy. They are popular for a reason, and each one is backed by trusted reviewers or thousands of real reviews.
What makes self-care stick for busy moms
- It takes 20 minutes or less
- It replaces the phone instead of adding to it
- It feels like a treat, not a chore
- It works on a tired Tuesday, not just a spa day
The 4 cozy self-care essentials

Kindle Paperwhite
Reading on my phone at night always turned into scrolling. A Kindle fixed that. The screen has no glare, the warm light can shift to amber for bedtime, and it is waterproof for bath reading. PCMag calls the 2024 Paperwhite the best e-reader for most people, and Wirecutter suggests it if you read a lot at night. It is often on sale for about $150.
- Glare-free 7 inch screen with warm light
- Battery lasts weeks, not hours
- Waterproof for the tub

Dr Teal's Lavender Epsom Salt Soak
The cheapest self-care upgrade in my house. A few scoops of Epsom salt with lavender turns a regular bath into a calm, sore-muscle soak. It has 4.8 out of 5 stars from more than 2,300 reviews at Target, and a 3 pound bag costs under $6.
- Lavender scent for winding down
- Lasts for many baths
- Paraben-free and phthalate-free

Bedsure Fleece Throw Blanket
Every couch needs one soft blanket that is just for mom. This one is light but warm, comes in lots of colors, and goes straight in the washer. At about $13, you will not mind when the kids steal it.
- Super soft microfiber fleece
- Lightweight, so it does not overheat
- Machine washable

Hatch Restore 3
A sunrise alarm, sound machine, and reading light in one, so the phone can stay out of the bedroom. It wakes you up with light that slowly brightens instead of a jarring beep. WIRED gave it 8 out of 10. Good to know: some of the sounds and routines need a paid Hatch+ subscription, and Target reviewers give it 4 out of 5 stars, so it is a splurge.
- Gentle sunrise wake-up
- Sleep sounds and a soft reading light
- Lets you keep your phone out of reach at night

My 20-minute fall wind-down routine
- Put your phone on the charger in another room.
- Run a warm bath with two scoops of lavender Epsom salt (10 minutes).
- Wrap up in the throw and read on the Kindle with warm light (10 minutes).
- Set the sunrise alarm and turn on a sleep sound.
- Lights out. Same time every night, as often as you can.
A few safety notes
Check with your doctor before using Epsom salt if you have diabetes, are pregnant, or have a skin condition. Keep the water warm, not hot. Prices and ratings change often, so check the latest before you buy.
